If you enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment Period last fall and it hasn’t been the right fit, there’s good news. The Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA-OEP) gives you another chance to make a change before spring.

What Is the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period?

The MA-OEP runs from January 1 through March 31, 2026. During this window, anyone currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan can make one change to their plan. This is separate from the Annual Enrollment Period, which ended on December 7th.

During the MA-OEP, you can:

  1. Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to a different Medicare Advantage plan
  2. Drop your Medicare Advantage plan and return to Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
  3. Enroll in a standalone Part D prescription drug plan if you return to Original Medicare

Why North Carolina Beneficiaries Are Reconsidering Their Plans

Recent network changes have affected many Medicare Advantage members across Western North Carolina. Some beneficiaries discovered their doctors are no longer in-network, while others have experienced changes to covered services or prescription formularies.

The MA-OEP provides an opportunity to address these concerns without waiting until next fall.

Considering a Move to Original Medicare and a Supplement?

Some Medicare Advantage members use the MA-OEP to transition back to Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy. This combination often provides broader provider access since most doctors who accept Medicare will accept Original Medicare patients.

While the MA-OEP allows you to disenroll from Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare, Medicare Supplement plans may require medical underwriting if you’re outside your initial Medigap enrollment period. A licensed insurance agent can help you understand your options.

The March 31 Deadline Is Approaching

You have until March 31, 2026 to make your one-time change during the MA-OEP. After this date, most beneficiaries will need to wait until the next Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) to make changes, unless they qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
